We are living in the era of rapid artificial intelligence (AI) development. People are finding new things to do with AI and companies all over the world are catering to this demand. Since the launch of ChatGPT, the largest chatbot with over 100 million weekly active users as of November 2023, many companies presented alternatives to OpenAI’s tool. The latest one is Samsung Gauss – the offering from Samsung Electronics to surprise AI fans. The company announced the launch of the tool on November 15, 2023.
The announcement of the Gauss instantly got the world riled up. So what is Gauss? How does it work? And what does Samsung’s announcement mean for the AI space? We break it all down in this guide.
Samsung Gauss Explained
The first thing to understand is what exactly Gauss is and how it works. As Samsung has explained, Gauss is a generative AI model developed by its research team. It is being used by Samsung to increase employee productivity and it has three different tools associated with it. These are Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image.
Because Gauss is a generative AI model, each of its tools works towards creating new data. Samsung Gauss Language, for example, can understand and predict human language. In a similar vein to ChatGPT, it can answer questions that are asked by users and can compose text like emails. This language model is also capable of summarizing text it has access to and translating text from one language to another.
Samsung Gauss Code is more focused on code development and can help developers review and test code at a faster pace. The tool can describe code, explaining to the user what a line of code is designed to do and helping them to understand it better. This way, errors can be spotted and more transparency is achieved. In addition, it is capable of test case generation. In other words, the tool generates test suites for applications to find potential bugs or faults in them. This helps developers make fewer mistakes and know their applications better.
Samsung Gauss Image is its image-generation tool and is designed to generate both high and low-resolution images and convert an image from one resolution to another when prompted by users. While it is nowhere near its final form, it does seem to hit most of the notes in terms of the current popular uses of AI and from all indications, will play a bigger role in Samsung’s products moving forward.
From all indications, Samsung Gauss has been trained to receive and process a large amount of data and understand how such data is created and its logical sequence. Take the language learning model: by being exposed to large amounts of email templates and examples, it would be known that formal emails often begin with ‘Dear Sir/Ma’am’. So when a user asks the AI to write an email to their boss, it knows to begin the email that way. The same is true of its image generation and the coding development tools.
The capabilities of Samsung Gauss are as follows:
- Content creation. Through its text and image generation capabilities, the Samsung Gauss can be used to create both written and visual content. This means that people like bloggers, entertainers, and other content creators will find it useful.
- Code development. The fact that Samsung Gauss Code can help to generate test suites and describe existing code means that it can be used in the software industry both by newer and more experienced developers.
- Research purposes. Both on a small and large scale, the Samsung Gauss can help in researching existing concepts and help push the limits of what we can do with AI every day.
- AI adoption. It’s no secret that AI use is rather controversial. But if a vetted tool like Samsung Gauss is available on Samsung mobile devices, it will push adoption across the board and perhaps quell some of the anxieties surrounding it.
And Gauss will only get better with time. The more it is used for a variety of tasks, the better it will become at predicting language, code, and images. At the first stages of the launch, Gauss is being used internally at Samsung but there are plans to release it to the public at some point in the future. On top of this, Samsung has teased the Galaxy AI, which will bring the AI experience to its mobile devices. While it hasn’t been confirmed whether Galaxy AI is based on Gauss, it likely is. This means that as millions of Samsung users around the world leverage the AI, its performance will improve even more.
Samsung Gauss Launch
The Samsung Gauss was announced at the Samsung AI Forum 2023 in South Korea on November 15, 2023. The event is hosted by Samsung Research and Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology and brings together the most cutting-edge research in the field of AI. The tool was developed by the Samsung Research team and is currently being used within the company.
However, this innovation would not be an in-house experience for long. Samsung confirmed that it would be included in future products and local media has speculated that the Gauss would be a feature of the Samsung Galaxy S24 series scheduled to launch in January 2024. The name Gauss is a reference to Carl Friedrich Gauss, the creator of normal distribution theory, which is a core part of AI technology.
Even with all the excitement around this new tool, Samsung is covering its bases with its AI Red Team. This team is tasked to “proactively eliminate and monitor security and privacy issues” that might be associated with AI-driven projects.
Samsung Gauss vs Other AI Models
As soon as the Samsung Gauss was announced, comparisons were made between it and other existing AI models. In fact, many see it as Samsung’s answer to Chat-GPT. But how does it stack up? First, it is also a generative AI model similar to ChatGPT, though it doesn’t yet have all the same capabilities.
Some of the features it has in common with AIs already on the market include text generation, image generation, language translation, text summary, and code development.
However, there are still some features that ChatGPT and other AI tools offer that Gauss doesn’t yet have. These include video generation, recipe creation, audio generation, writing creative texts such as fiction and poems, and creating schedules for users.
Of course, Samsung Gauss is much newer than many of these AI tools so its capabilities are limited compared to them. One major leg up that Gauss has is that it is backed by one of the most respected names in mobile devices and will be built into Samsung phones in the coming years. This instantly gives it name recognition and access to millions of users that other AIs can only hope for.
As AI becomes more popular, many companies are in a race to bring accessibility to the masses and capitalize off current demand. Samsung has thrown its hat into the ring with the Gauss tool and shows a lot of promise with it. The AI can aid with both text, code, and image creation and seems on track to enter the wider market by next year.
While it will compete for market space with the likes of ChatGPT, its association with Samsung gives it an edge and it will be interesting to see what public response is once it is widely available.
